Over 700,000 poor people live in Mathare Valley, one of the largest and poorest slums in the world. Located just a few kilometers from the Nairobi city center, over half of its population is youth who, due to the challenging environment are at risk of engaging in drug abuse, theft, early school drop out, early pregnancy, succumbing to diseases and joining gang activities. 

Playing team sports is one mean of keeping the youth occupied, building positive relationships and self-esteem and encouraging good health.

Real Mathare is a self-organized sports club wihich was founded by young people in Mathare.
